My understanding of infant mortality, death within the first year of life, was that it had significantly declined over the decades. According to Feldman, it has been declining since the 1960’s. Unfortunately, however, I learned that the United States, regarded by many as the richest country in the world, has almost double the mortality rate of Singapore, Japan, and Sweden. Singapore is also known for its diverse population and so I am saddened that our nation lags in child-birth leave policies and overall adequate resources for the health and survival of neonates and their families. One of six pregnant women, primarily African American mothers, receives insufficient prenatal care, resulting in higher infant mortality rates. I believe that we should follow in the footsteps of Norway, France, and Germany and provide low-cost, even free care in impoverished situations, during pregnancies as well as paid maternity leave for at least 12 weeks.   Â
